Guidance on Electric Hook-up for Campervans, Caravans & Tents

We have 2 different types of electric hook up available:

  • 6 Amps max, very light power use only (pitches 14,15,16,17,18,19, 48,49,50,52,53,54)
  • 10 Amps max, light to medium power use only (pitches 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,42,43,45)

  • Our outlets are standard blue 240v IP44 electrical connectors protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD) for safety designed to cut off the supply in the event of a fault in your connecting lead, caravan or appliance. If you want to use them you need to bring your own cable.

This is a 25m hook up cable which will work with most vehicles

If you are in a tent then you will need to have a cable with an adapter for a 3 pin plug built in like this one

  • Our 6amp hookups are designed for extremely light loads and for safety are restricted to a maximum load of 6 Amps - approx. 1.3kW (1300watts)
  • Our 10amp hookups are designed for light loads and for safety are restricted to a maximum load of 10 Amps - approx. 2.4kW (2400watts)
  • You must have integral RCD (Residual Current Device) and MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) IP44 Weatherproof Unit
  • Please purchase units designed for caravan / camping use. Do not use equipment that seems similar but which may not be.
  • It is not advisable to use normal household appliances; purchase appliances designed for camping use.
  • Do not attempt to ‘make your own’ unless you are qualified to do so and fully understand the technical implications.
  • Use only approved cables and run cables around the edge of the field away from vehicle or walkways. If you connect two cables together the joint should use approved connectors, covered against rain and supported off the ground.
  • Some domestic appliances are unsuitable for us - eg. do not use ordinary domestic kettles or fan heaters; these can draw over 10 Amps. Special low wattage appliances are available from camping & caravan dealers

How to connect

  • Make sure that the isolating switch in your unit is off
  • Connect your cables first to the unit, then the hookup outlet and switch on
  • Check that your electrical circuits are safe to use with a circuit tester available from most camping dealers.
  • When you are ready to leave, first switch off your isolating switch, disconnect the cable and remove. Campervans should not leave cables lying around when off-pitch
  • Any loss of supply should be reported to our staff.
  • If you overload your supply, the breaker in the outlet pod will trip off. Disconnect extra appliances before re-setting the breaker in the outlet pod.
  • NB. If the loss of supply is because you have overloaded the circuit or misused equipment there may be a charge for restoring your supply or the supply may be withdrawn.

How much power am I using?

You can get general wattage number for common appliances in the table below, but these are only a guide.

The only way to know how much power your set up is attempting to draw is by looking at your own appliances.

You are responsible for checking that the hook up you have booked is suitable for the set up you are using.

1. Look at your own appliances.  They will usually have a sticker showing the wattage of the appliance.

2. Add up the Wattage or Amps for each appliance in use at any one time

3. If on a 6amp pitch make sure that the total added up of all appliances does not exceed 1300 watts or 6 amps OR If on a 10amp pitch make sure that the total added up of all appliances does not exceed 2400 watts or 10 amps

Most Domestic Appliances cannot be used - they will overload the supply and cause it to trip
